Founded in 1949 by Giulio Castelli, a young chemical engineer, began the company manufacturing auto accessories, lighting fixtures, and household products using materials that were economically efficient. in 1963 they opened their home division focusing on furniture and interior design elements. Right from the beginning, Kartell put its focus on plastic as their material of choice.

In 1988, Claudio Luti took over as the head of Kartell and built the company into the design icon it is today.
