Founded in 1949 by Giulio Castelli, a young chemical engineer, began the company manufacturing auto accessories, lighting fixtures, and household products using materials that were economically efficient. in 1963 they opened their home division focusing on furniture and interior design elements. Right from the beginning, Kartell put its focus on plastic as their material of choice.
In 1988, Claudio Luti took over as the head of Kartell and built the company into the design icon it is today. Working along side Philippe Starck as their first international designer, they transformed the mentality of plastic worldwide creating furniture made entirely of plastic which was never done before. They were the first company ever to use polycarbonate in the production of furniture which proved that they were the pioneers and true kings of plastic.
Kartell’s cutting edge technology, innovation, and some of the world’s best designers has taken Kartell to the top of modern design.
